How is lancelot loyal to arthur

I have never actually been dubbed a knight The first character I will be analyzing is Sir Gawain. Sir Gawain is one of the main characters within this story. In the beginning of the story, we see that Sir Gawain is full of optimism, eagerness, and loyalty to protect his king and his kingdom from the Green Knight. Sir Gawain is seen as the embodiment of chivalry. An example of chivalrous manners can be found such as in his speech to Arthur when he accepts the Green Knight 's challenge.

Here, Wiglaf proves himself the better man because he has honor while the others, who willingly abandoned their King in battle, clearly do not. Lastly, Beowulf and Wiglaf both show outstanding loyalty throughout the piece.

Having to constantly look back at the footnotes make the reading a lot harder to grasp and get the full understanding of the text. At the same time men must obey, honor, and having a high level of respect for their lord.

As the men having respect for their lords the same respect go towards their wives and The Lord allows a balance of fidelity from each person that ask. I found the story to be a bit difficult to sit through since there was quite a few footnotes throughout the story which was rather distracting. Yet, he ultimately gives into temptation and commits adultery with the wife of the man he swore to serve. He uses love as an excuse to justify his dishonorable and immoral actions, and that just makes me feel bad for Arthur.

A code of chivalry is highly based on loyalty and respect. At first the king did not want to face the fact that Lancelot had slept with his wife the Queen.

He believed that Lancelot was honest and loyal to him. Sadly he was mistaken. Even when their secret was exposed and the Queen was to be killed the Knight proclaimed his love and authority by telling her he would save her. I did not really understand the story. Like Allison said, it is very distracting to try to understand by constantly have to refer to footnotes. However, it seems that chivalry is not only a code for relationships of intimacy but of also relationships for hierarchy.

As long as the two relationships stay separate, there is no need to give it much significance even f it is flawed. It seems as though there Genevere is not as important at times, especially because Arthur often times seems to be ignorant to the fact that Lancelot and his wife are together.

I also think the love of pride is also something that plays into the story. It is said that Lancelot saved the king and the queen on multiple occasions which is his duty as a knight. On the other hand he was also sleeping with the queen which is one of the highest forms of disrespect. When their secret is unmasked Lancelot and the queen both know she will be put to death.

Lancelot makes the promise to save her if this happens. Making this choice to save her is a direct slap in the face to the king.

So it seems Lancelot chose his love for the queen over his bond with the king. This unthinkable act feuds a war. Perhaps if Lancelot had not chosen a woman over his king things would not have ended up the way they did. The king the very beginning had his own suspicion that Sir Lancelot was sleeping with his wife but he could not face it so he kept denying it until he said if you have proof only then I will believe.

The fact that the King agreed to have Sir Agravain and Sir Mordred see bring back Sir Lancelot dead or alive after speaking to highly of him was quiet interesting, but even with them creating this plan he stills remind them to beware that he is very strong. But Guinevere kept holding on. When Elaine, the fair maid of Astolat, fell in love with Lancelot, Guinevere got very jealous of her.

Lancelot told Elaine that he could never marry her and she died of a broken heart. A few years later another Elaine of Corbenic fell in love with Lancelot and got him to spend the night with her, with the help of a magic spell. This magic made him believe that she was Guinevere. Out of this night Galahad was born, Lancelot's only known son. But this was just a one night stand and his relationship with Guinevere just went on. At last Mordred forced the scandal into the open.

Since the queen's adultery counted as treason, Arthur had to sentence her to be burned at the stake. Lancelot arrived with a group of armed man and rescued her, but the fight between his followers and the king's knights was the beginning of the break-up of the Round Table.
